Spotlight on Ed Unitsky

Ray Carney

What kind of art education do you have?

Ed Unitsky:birth-of-the-king.jpg
I am self taught, my artistic ability is natural born.

In regards to your gallery experiences, which do you prefer, the

internet or gallery spaces?

EU:

Currently, my artwork is on the internet, on CD/DVD covers, Posters for Musicians, and websites. I have had one gallery exhibition at Cusco Jack’s in Rockford, Illinois that my manager hosted for me. I have a few galleries that we are working with who have requested exhibitions of my artwork, so this is a possibility very soon.

Do you feel the internet is a gallery?

EU:Yes. Sort of different kind of gallery. The internet is a powerful resource for everyone. It is an amazing way to reach people all over the world.

Your work is very surreal, what are your inspirations?

new-soul.jpgEU: These are ideas that simply come into my head. When I think of something, I begin to create this. I always have music playing and music puts me in the mood to create.

Do you use photography mixed with digital, or is your imagery

purely digital?

EU:Some of both, it really just depends. I paint in oils, sketch, use watercolors, and air brushing. Often, I paint something and then enhance this digitally as well. The ability to combine mixed media is fascinating and truly expands the creativity.

I”m seeing a lot of eye reference in your work. Is that a reference to the idea of the third eye?

EU:The eyes are the window to the soul … it is the light of spirit …

Where do you come up with these fantasy places, out of your head, or are the references to specific places you’ve been?

EU:I imagine them in my mind and sometimes it is as if I really live in them. When I start working on a piece, the ideas evolve as I create them.

When are you putting a book of your artwork out?

EU:Ask my manager. (laughing) She takes care of these things.

Do you draw inspiration from music as you work, and if so, what music do you find inspiring and who are your favorite musicians?

EU:transparent-medium.jpgI have a big thirst for music. I always have something playing. My favorite of course is progressive rock music, but, I also enjoy rock, opera, classical, blues, jazz, indie, and many other forms of music … there are only a few types of music I don’t like.

As for favorite musicians, there simply too many to name.

Your rendering style seems different from image to image, how do you pick which style to use?

EU:tfkfront-coveredunitsky.jpgAnd idea just comes in my head, I don’t really think about it much. And when it comes, I just create it.

How do you determine your palette for imagery?

EU:I start with a blank screen. Then, I play with colors for awhile, and when one strikes my mood I begin with it.

How do you know when your pieces are done?

EU:They are never really finished. Sometimes, years later, I will take an old piece and rework it. I am very fussy and picky.

Thank you for this interview.
